Situated northwest of Barcelona in Terrassa, Spain, Parc Vallès is an open-air shopping centre that opened in 1998. Following Frey’s acquisition of the centre, Broadway Malyan was appointed to oversee its redesign, aligning it with the Shopping Promenade concept—a design philosophy that integrates shops, play and leisure facilities and cultural activities.
Transforming a long-established retail destination into Spain’s first shopping promenade
The overarching goal was to revitalise the centre’s outdoor spaces, making them more inviting and visitor-friendly. New social spaces, shaded areas, extensive greenery, and a children’s play area have been introduced, breathing new life into Plaza de la Restauración, the heart of the centre. Water features and rest areas now punctuate the pedestrian walkways, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Throughout the eight-month construction period, operations at the centre continued uninterrupted. Key enhancements included the renovation of the main façades, which now feature sustainable natural wood latticework and canopies. The remaining façades have also been significantly updated, offering a fresh and modern aesthetic. The car parks have been reconfigured and optimised, improving traffic flow within the site and connections to the surrounding urban roads.
Parc Vallès occupies a prominent position in Terrassa and the wider Vallès region. The recent renovation elevates the visitor experience and strengthens its contribution to the local economy, reaffirming its role as a vital community hub that welcomes over 10 million visitors each year.
The project features mural works by local artists, including Anna Taratiel and Zosen Bandido, highlighting the centre’s role as a significant generator of employment and a social driving force within the Vallès region. Parc Vallès has also earned BREEAM environmental certification and Bisphere Committed certification, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
“Parc Vallès exemplifies the repositioning of shopping centres, focusing on outdoor spaces and landscaping to create more authentic and sustainable experiences.”Jorge Ponce, Head of Broadway Malyan Spain
