A landmark international school offering state-of-the-art teaching facilities

Broadway Malyan has designed a landmark international school in the heart of Singapore for one of Asia’s largest education organisations. The Nexus International School campus serves as the flagship for the Nexus brand and is intended to set a precedent for the school of the future. The new campus accommodates 2,000 students aged 3 to 18 and is accessible to the local community outside of school hours and on weekends.

Facilities include a 50-metre indoor swimming pool, a sports field, two sports halls, an astroturf pitch and multiple outdoor play decks, along with an enhanced public realm, café, library and auditorium. The school also offers a variety of adaptable learning spaces.

At the heart of the campus is the Innovation Hub, a showcase space dedicated to the development of new pedagogic ideas.

A range of initiatives supports the design ambition of ‘zero waste, zero water, zero energy’. These include technologies such as heating the pool using waste heat from learning spaces, smart shading controlled by sunlight sensors and improved rainwater management tailored to local climatic conditions.

Set between the Pan Island Expressway, a busy arterial route, and the Pelton Canal, part of the Singapore Park Connector Loop, the compact site necessitated an innovative "vertical campus" concept, with the junior school on the lower floors and the senior school on the higher floors.

Shared leisure facilities, including a café and play deck, are positioned between the two schools, with additional shared spaces such as the library and auditorium located on the lower floors. The 10th-floor "mega labs" further distinguish the school, offering facilities akin to high-end commercial laboratories.

The design features a striking, protective façade facing the expressway, with its dynamic and flowing form evoking the movement of cars, making it a prominent landmark for drivers. On the canal side, the campus opens up to engage with the local community, enhancing the public realm and revitalising the canal area.

“At Nexus we believe in evidence based pedagogy which centres learning around the student. Our experienced staff personalise and tailor their lessons to each individual to ensure their particular learning levels are met. Teaching in this collaborative and interactive way requires a unique space that reflects this.”

Our approach has been to leverage our masterplanning expertise to create a school that functions as a microcosm of a successful smart city, where services and spaces are fully integrated and harmonised with the broader environment.

As an Apple Distinguished School, technology plays a central role in curriculum delivery and has significantly influenced the design of the school's infrastructure. Cutting-edge technology is embedded throughout, including mobile smart projectors, Apple TV, cashless payment systems, GPS tracking for school transport and radio frequency identification (RFID) for all learners and staff.

While technology plays a key role, people are at the heart of the school’s design. We have prioritised the creation of flexible spaces that foster and support human interaction.

The Nexus School is designed around a 'structural grid' to maximise flexibility, accommodating the evolving needs of students and teachers. Rather than having fully enclosed classrooms, bespoke furniture with acoustic panelling is used to create spaces that can be adjusted in size as needed.

This approach provides a simple and adaptable solution for year group clusters, hubs and classrooms, ensuring the school can easily adapt to future trends in education.
