Yoo Forest House
Cotswolds

A home crafted to flow into tranquil woodland surroundings, offering its occupants a serene escape and deep connection to nature.

Inspired by clean, modern architecture, the home is laid out horizontally to contrast against the height of the woodland around it. Set on a plinth, the property gives the impression that it is floating over the interior and exterior spaces, reinforcing a sense of ethereal calm.

Constructed primarily from timber, the home extends seamlessly into the surrounding trees, while the restrained use of glass enhances this natural integration. An overhead terrace extending beyond the glazing further blurs the boundary between interior and exterior spaces.

From the entrance hall, immediate views reveal a singular stone monolith framed by the forest beyond. The room layout creates a sense of open living, harmoniously balancing solid walls, open spaces, and views of the surrounding landscape.

Large windows in the living spaces and master bedroom draw the forest closer, while smaller windows in other rooms offer more intimate glimpses of the trees.

Minimising environmental impact was a key element of the project brief, leading to the selection of timber and metal as primary construction materials to optimise the home’s sustainable design.

The horizontal roofline, while aesthetically significant, is also crafted to provide a deep sunshade around the building, offering essential cooling during the summer months.

“The experience of a misty midsummer sunrise or midwinter snow amongst the trees gives its occupants a sense of respite and escape, and affinity with nature.”
Hugo Fitzgerald, director, Broadway Malyan
