Barking Wharf
Barking, London

Riverside living reimagined

Barking Wharf has been designed as a Build to Rent scheme, comprising 514 homes across five buildings ranging in height from 7 to 15 storeys. The development includes extensive green space, along with commercial, leisure and communal facilities.

Barking Wharf is located on the fringes of Barking Town Centre, East London. Positioned between the revitalised River Roding and Abbey Green Park, the site sits within the River Roding Regeneration Area and replaces an unattractive retail park.

The walkways are lined with trees and extensive planting to maximise sustainability and support local ecology. Dedicated courtyard gardens have been created between the apartment blocks, providing outdoor spaces for the whole community to enjoy for play and social events.

New community facilities onsite include a cycle hub, gym, lounge, multiple terraces and commercial spaces. A community hub, available for local use, faces the historically significant ruins of Barking Abbey and is equipped with a residents' lounge and workspaces to meet the changing demands of modern working patterns.

We used brick cladding throughout the buildings, creating a simple, visually pleasing grid to frame the windows and sections of brick corbelling. Anodised aluminium balconies match the window frames, offering a timeless aesthetic. The overall effect is classic and contemporary, ensuring a solid, durable design with a clean, graceful lightness.
