Advanced laboratories designed for innovation and accessibility

Broadway Malyan has collaborated with Aston University on the successful delivery of several teaching and research laboratory projects, beginning with the Electrical, Electronic & Power Engineering (EEPE) laboratories, completed in 2018. This first project laid a strong foundation for future collaborations with other schools across the university.

The state-of-the-art facilities include a versatile superlab that can be divided into two smaller laboratories, accommodating up to 96 students or two teaching groups of 64 and 32. This flexible setup supports various electronics and power engineering courses, providing the EEPE faculty with an adaptable and dynamic teaching and learning environment.

Two project laboratories, accommodating 25 and 15 students respectively, are located near the superlab and dedicated to final-year students. These laboratories replicate the layout and immersive technology of the superlab, ensuring flexible usage and varied teaching schedules for other users across the wider faculty. They are directly connected to a specialist equipment room housing larger, advanced electronic equipment, providing final-year students with convenient access to specialist equipment without the need to travel elsewhere on campus.

A specialist soldering laboratory, designed for 39 students, features dedicated soldering stations with integrated desk-based fume extraction, meeting stringent health and safety requirements while supporting flexible service integration. The space also provides modern, adaptable facilities enhanced by immersive teaching technology.

The unique Student Society Lab serves as a collaborative student science hub at the heart of the facility. It provides staff and students with a versatile space for curriculum-based teaching and informal collaboration outside the standard timetable.

The latest project, completed for the Aston University Pharmacy School, includes a spacious, versatile l pharmacy lab accommodating 83 students, a prep room, a cell culture lab and a small aseptic suite.

The new facilities significantly enhance the teaching syllabus while supporting ongoing and future research projects using the latest technologies. These upgraded facilities will set the standard for all future College of Health and Life Sciences laboratories.

Aston University’s 2030 strategy includes a focus on inclusion, and the new laboratories have been designed with this in mind. They feature height-adjustable benches, fume hoods and safety cabinets suitable for wheelchair users. Rise-and-fall sinks have also been installed.

The fully functional aseptic suite will allow students to prepare drugs, including chemotherapy and cytotoxic drugs, as well as new drugs for trials and manipulate formulations. A dedicated space for lab-based research projects is equipped with a suite of new equipment for pharmaceutical characterisation. This is crucial for preparing pharmacy students for the industry and providing them with experience in pharmaceutical science and drug delivery.

"The labs will enable staff to provide an enhanced educational experience to students in a more comfortable, modern and inclusive environment."
