Associate Legal Counsel
London | Birmingham
The Legal Team is currently recruiting for the position of Associate Legal Counsel with contentious construction experience to assist with the group claims portfolio, the preparation and management of our construction agreements, and the provision of legal and corporate advice across the business.
Responsibilities and Duties
Assisting with the group claims portfolio and advising on legal/contractual issues that arise during project execution, including:
- Advising on construction disputes and litigation claims
- Leading on pre-action correspondence
- Liaising with insurers and external lawyers in relation to the global claims portfolio.
- Providing wider risk management tools for the global practice
Advising on contract terms and contract strategy, in particular:
- Construction contracts, including architect appointments, sub-consultancy agreements,
- novation agreements and collateral warranties
- Variations and contract amendments, and ancillary construction documents.
- Advising on contract interpretation and training non-legal staff in understanding
- contract terms
- Miscellaneous contracts, such as IT contracts and leases
Reporting to senior management as required on:
- Disputes and insurance claims
- Contract terms and status of negotiations
- Other issues with legal implications
Supporting Chief Legal Counsel and Company Secretary in:
- Training non-legal staff in understanding contract terms and BM policy on contract terms.
- Assisting with wider compliance, governance and business issues
- Developing policies and procedures to manage risk and streamline legal processes
- Developing and maintaining Legal Team operating procedures
- Developing and maintaining in-house standard form agreements
- Managing the relationship with PI and general insurers and insurance brokers
- Managing external lawyers and ensuring advice received meets the needs of the business
- Assisting with insurance renewals in relation to PI, cyber and general insurance
Skills & experience:
- Qualified lawyer with 3-5 years PQE
- At least 3+ years’ experience working in construction claims and disputes
- Mature, robust and confident, with a commercial and pragmatic approach
- Clear and concise verbal and written communicator
- Well-organised and comfortable with a high volume flow of work
Desired:
- Non-contentious experience in the construction industry
- In-house experience
- Experience working in other jurisdictions
- Experience in advising architects or other consultancy practices
- Interested in corporate governance and compliance
