Margarida Caldeira appointed as ULI Portugal Chair

Broadway Malyan practice principal and Lisbon studio lead Margarida Caldeira has been appointed as the first woman chair of the ULI (Urban Land Institute) Portugal.

Margarida is one of Portugal’s most experience real estate professionals, having helped spearhead the international expansion of Broadway Malyan with the opening of its Lisbon studio in 1996 and its Sao Paulo studio in Brazil in 2010.

She is highly experienced across a wide range of sectors and is currently global hospitality lead where she has overseen the development of a world-class portfolio of projects for some of the world’s best known hotel operators and investment funds.

Having joined the ULI in 2016, Margarida has been a member of the ULI Portugal Executive Committee since 2022 and is also a member of the ULI Europe Hotels, Destinations and Resorts Product Council. Margarida replaces outgoing chair Francisco Rocha Antunes, the founder of developer +urbano and CEO of housing cooperatives manager MOME.

Margarida said: “It is a huge privilege to have been asked to become the new chair at such an exciting time for Portugal, with the economy experiencing a golden moment, tourism breaking all records and investment continuing to flow into the country.

“We have now entered a new era for real estate in terms of how we think about the places and spaces that we need for today and into the future and I am looking forward to helping to shape these exciting conversations by continuing to build on the knowledge sharing that underpins the work of ULI.

“A key challenge facing Portugal today is housing affordability and I hope to build on the positive work already being undertaken by ULI Portugal in its mission to find a solution to this increasingly critical issue.

“I am also very proud to be the first woman chair of ULI Portugal and I shall continue to be the strongest possible advocate for creating the right environments that allow women to thrive across all sectors of the built environment.”

Lisette van Doorn, CEO of ULI Europe, added: “I am very pleased that Margarida Caldeira, who is a highly experienced and connected industry leader and very active ULI member, will be at the helm of ULI Portugal for the next two years as it leverages industry opportunities and helps our members and the wider industry navigate important challenges such as climate change and housing affordability.

“She is extremely well placed to build upon Francisco’s work, to continue to grow our membership in Portugal and deliver a local programme that embeds ULI’s global mission priorities, working closely with the executive committee and wider leadership.”

The ULI is a non-profit education and research institute that has more than 48,000 members worldwide and 5,500 members across 15 National Council country networks in Europe.

As a multi-disciplinary real estate forum, the ULI facilitates is focused on information and knowledge sharing between industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better, more sustainable places.
