Sustainable Stories: World of Wine
13th November 2024

Drawing new visitors, inspiring growth and paving the way for a sustainable future in the heart of Porto’s historic wine district.

World of Wine, a world-class tourist attraction launched in 2021 by the Fladgate Partnership Group, is set within a series of former warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia. Situated along the river in Porto, this area serves as the historic heart of Portugal’s wine industry, with hundreds of warehouses—many dating back to the early 19th century—where wine and Port were traditionally stored.

The design philosophy centred on retaining and restoring these historically significant buildings. This approach revitalises the area, preserving its heritage while providing it with a vibrant, cultural and touristic future.

Broadway Malyan collaborated closely with local authorities to evaluate the existing buildings, identifying those suitable for restoration and those that could be replaced with appropriate contemporary additions.

Many of the buildings were fully renewed, with original timber beams replaced and original granite brickwork carefully restored. Where feasible, materials from dilapidated warehouses were repurposed in the restoration of buildings that retained structural integrity. When reuse of the original granite was not possible, locally sourced stone was used, which also featured in the design of the new additions.

The modern interventions in the scheme were designed to reflect the urban grain through the use of traditional forms and a sense of materiality, in harmony with the existing structures. This sympathetic approach ensures the development blends seamlessly into the historic view from Porto and across the river, adding another layer to its long history. All museums and facilities are housed within the rehabilitated warehouses, cellars and modern structures beneath.

Visitors and locals alike appreciate how World of Wine respects the area's historic connection to Port Wine while introducing innovative touches that make it a top attraction.

The outdoor plaza creates a new civic space, providing a subtle contrast to the heritage setting. The new plaza has opened up a series of stunning views for the first time, allowing the public to gaze across the traditional pitched rooves of the warehouses below towards the historic Porto’s Ribeira district on the far side of the river.

In terms of energy efficiency, World of Wine meets all requirements with robust thermal insulation through isothermal panels, maintaining the original materials wherever possible. A centralised technical management system allows for the more effective control of HVAC, lighting, security and other equipment.

In 2021, National Geographic Travel named Porto the best destination for cultural exploration, with World of Wine at the heart of this cultural transformation. Alongside its focus on the wine and Port industry, the gallery has hosted world-class exhibitions, including a Francis Bacon show designed specifically for the unique space.

The result is a scheme that respects its location, blending old and new with an attention to detail that creates a unique public space. This development not only celebrates one of Portugal’s most important industries but also drives major economic regeneration in the surrounding area, offering a vibrant destination for all to enjoy.

The World of Wine focuses on placemaking, transforming redundant warehouses into a civic square and cultural centre that tells the story of Port and wine production in Portugal.
